Diagnosis: Specie Stereocaulon vesuvianum similis sed ab ea differt praesentia acidi lobarici (haud stictici) et apotheciis terminalibus (haud lateralibus). A specibus Stereocaulon obesum et S. weberi differt pseudopodetiis gracilioribus fragilioribusque (haud crassis et vermicularibus) et apotheciis terminalibus.
Type: U.S.A. Alaska. Skagway Borough, White Pass, 59o36.825'N, 135o07.339'W, 11 Sep 2008, terricolous in alpine, 962 m, T. Spribille 29377 (US, holotype; CANL, isotype).
Habitat and distribution: Alpine, terricolous on detritus, found especially on the tops of boulders used as bird perches with Gowardia nigricans and Sphaerophorus fragilis. A few specimens were saxicolous. So far known only from the study area.
Comment: Stereocaulon klondikense clearly belongs in Stereocaulon sect. Denudata subsect. Denudata of Lamb (1977), which we refer to as the Stereocaulon vesuvianum group. (Source: Spribille et al. 2010, p. 459)
